Writing/Grammar - Irregular verbs, exclamation mark, question mark, and Test 16. Reading - Text features: headings, titles, index, table of contents. Book study in 4th grade classrooms. Math - Test Saxon 18B and Galileo 18B, Practice includes mean, median, mode, geometric solids, and constructing prisms and pyramids. Science - Technology focus articles: Red Sprites, Blue Jets, and Elves, Deep Flight II, Discovering the Planets, Moving Solutions, Nuclear Options, Great Stink. Language: Common nouns, pronouns review, and pronoun usage. Reading: Quarter 4 mystery book report assignment will be handed out along with new reading log. Students will read a Greek myth and take a short test. AZ Merit reading passage practice will continue. Math: Timed tests daily, Math for Today, and AZ Merit math review with emphasis on fractions, decimals, and percents. · . Science Fair Display – Friday March 8th, 2:25pm. March Poem Recitation is America the Beautiful, March 28th. 3rd Quarter Reading logs are due March 15. Early Release – 3/15 for Staff Development Spring Break – 3/18 – 3/22 Academics: In Spalding, we are entering list 25 and being tested on list 24. · In Language, we will complete grammar lessons 72 Pronoun use, 73 dependent/independent clauses,. In writing we will continue to work on writing a 1st person narrative · . In Reading, we will continue our study of text structures by focusing on cause and effect. We will finish reading McBroom and the Big Wind and take comprehension test. We will also learn about the problem/solution text structure and classification. · In Math, we will begin a review unit on fractions, decimals and percentages. This will be individual lessons and will not be directly out of the text book. · In Science, we will begin to explore magnetism and electricity. We will also begin an AIMS Test review packet to prepare for upcoming standardized testing. · In Social Studies, we will continue to read Unit 4 on how government works. Announcements:

8th Grade Car Wash 2/9- Support our 8th Grade with their upcoming graduation activities Half Day 2/15 – Early Release for Parent/Teacher Conferences – You will receive notification from your child’s teacher indicating whether or not a conference is required. No School (President’s Day) – 2/18 Spring Fling - 3/2 – 11:00 am to 2:00 pm Please Remember: Students should be having their homework folder checked nightly to see if there is material that needs to be read and signed by parents/ guardians. Also by signing the planner you are acknowledging that you have seen their completed homework and behavior logs. Please do not sign the planner without looking to see if homework is completed. Also, please be sure to check behavior charts and sign if there has been a checkmark added because of a behavior event that day. Academics Spalding - The students will enter List 21 Spelling Words and will be tested on List 20 on Friday 2/08. Language/Writing – Students will continue grammar lessons focused on progressive verbs, pronouns, and antecedents. Grammar test Monday 2/4. Students will continue to work on Poetry Compare/Contrast Essays in class. Reading – This week’s reading focus is to identify and compare Author’s Purpose. Students will read different selections and practice identifying and verbalizing the purpose of the piece. We will also continue reading in our book studies (Tale of Despereaux, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nymn, The BFG and Holes - the study depending on classroom). . February Poem Recitations is the list of US Presidents. Students must recite the President’s last name, in order. Due February 27th. No book report this quarter – see Science Fair Project for this quarter’s “report”. Math – We will begin moving faster through chapters this semester. This week’s lessons will be Chapter 66, 69, and 70. The next Test will be Friday 2/8. Science – This week we will continue to practice measuring in different methods and units. This should help students with the measuring they need to do in their science projects. Remember the 5-paragraph essay and research page are due this Friday, 2/8. The next due date is for the Documentation Form on 2/20 (see rubric for instructions/specifics). Social Studies - We are reading Unit 3, Lesson 3. This unit is bringing us to the point in history where we discuss Arizona’s involvement in World War I. Quiz on the next chapter will be next week. Announcements
- Spirit Day Assembly is this coming Friday, February 1st, at 8:15 AM on the basketball court. - The recitation for January is Wednesday. Please remember to study and bring your packet. - The Scientist Biography and Research are due next Friday, February 8th. Please see the due dates inside the Science Project packet to help you keep up with each step of the Science Project. Academics Spalding - The students will enter List 20 Spelling Words and will be tested on List 19. Language/Writing – The students will complete Grammar Lessons 58, 59 and 60 (with emphasis on comma usage and appositives). Students will have a grammar test next Monday (02/04/19). We will also be writing essays comparing and contrasting two poems. Reading - The students will continue with identifying elements of stories and recalling main ideas. We are also beginning to practice the proper use of elements of a good book: Setting, Character, Plot, Theme, etc. We will continue reading in our book studies (Tale of Despereaux, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nymn, The BFG and Holes - the study depending on which teacher your child has). . Math – The students will be learning geometry concepts. We will complete lesson 65 on division and we will learn different strategies for division. Students will receive study guide 12 on Thursday. Science – The students will be reading about density this week and doing an investigation on Friday. If you have cereal and or raisins you would like to donate, please send them with your child. Social Studies - The students will be reading Unit 3, Lesson 4, which focuses on the westward expansion. |
