Week of August 29th

Quick Announcements:
  • Friday is spirit day. Please join us for our morning assembly. 
  • Please remember to sign in to the office, even if you have a lanyard.
Our Learning this Week:
  • In Spalding, we will enter list 2 and be tested on list 1. 
  • In language/writing, we will learn about common and proper nouns, singular and plural nouns, and verb tenses. We will complete grammar lessons 9-11 and will have grammar test 1 on Wednesday. We will learn to write complex sentences.
  • In reading, we are focusing on reading strategies. We will learn about predicting, context clues and making connections. We will read chapters 7 and 8 of Tale of Despereaux. 
  • In math, students will have test 1 on Monday. We will complete lessons 11, 13, 14 and 15. In science, we will learn about the respiratory and circulatory systems. We will read pages A96-99.
  • In social studies, we will study maps, including globes and hemispheres, map projections, map grids, and latitude and longitude. 

Week of January 9th

Quick Announcements:
  • Project guidelines for quarter 3 will be distributed Monday. Please remember to talk with your children about their science fair project (in place of a book report), their recitation and reading log.
  • Report cards for quarter 2 will be distributed on Wednesday. 
  • Friday is early release for staff development.
Our Learning this Week:
  • In Spalding, we will enter list 17 and be tested on list 16. 
  • In language/writing, we will learn about capital letters, parts of speech, suffixes and onomatopoeia. We will complete grammar lessons 59 and 60 with a grammar test on Thursday. 
  • In reading, we will continue our study of summarizing and identifying the theme/moral of a story. We will read The Value of Little Things and Blackfoot Story in the What Joy Awaits text. There will be a study guide Thursday for the test on Friday.
  • In math, we will complete lesson 58 and investigation 6 on multiplying 3 digit numbers and displaying data using graphs. There will be a study guide Wednesday for the test on Thursday. 
  • In science, we will begin our study of the scientific method. We will learn about scientific inquiry, and we will learn to differentiate between observations and inferences.
  • In social studies, we will review unit 1. Students will receive a study guide Monday for the test on Tuesday, We will begin reading the introductory pages for unit 2. 

Week of August 22nd

Quick Announcements:
  • Please join the fourth grade teachers for curriculum night on Wednesday from 7:30-8:00. We will be reviewing the fourth grade curriculum, classroom policies and procedures. Please, due to time and space limitations, parents only for this event.
  • As a reminder, students will have math homework every night, including finishing any incomplete timed tests. Please always review your child's agenda to ensure that they are writing the homework and not attending Opportunity Club. 
Our Learning this Week:
  • In Spalding, we will enter spelling list 1  in addition to our oral and written phonogram review. We will review syllable patterns and rules 3 and 16. 
  • In language/writing, we will learn about alphabetizing, the phonogram ed, rule 21, and suffixes. We will complete grammar lessons 3-8. We will learn how to write compound sentences.
  • In reading, we will learn reading strategies and how to use context to discern the meaning of unknown words. We will read How Thor got his Hammer and How Theseus Lifted the Stone. We will continue with our book study and learn about the types of text structures. 
  • In math, we will complete lessons 5, 6, 9, and investigation 1 on ordinal numbers, subtraction problems, adding with regrouping, and number lines. Students will receive a study guide on Friday for the first math test. As a reminder, there will be two study guides: one from Saxon (this one will be titled 1A) and one titled math quiz 1 which will include higher-level questioning and math vocabulary. Students are expected to study both for the test. The teacher will go over the study guide prior to sending it home.
  • In science, we will continue our study of the structures and functions of plant and animal parts. We will read A76-79 and A 86-93.
  • In social studies, we will learn about human and physical features (such as mountains, railroads, bays, etc.), we will learn to identify key parts of Arizona on a map, we will also learn about how resources are used to meet people's needs, how natural events can affect humans, and we will work in collaborative groups to apply what we've learned to create our own unique state!

Quick Announcements:
  • The first day of school is August 11th. 
  • Please remember there is no hot lunch until Monday.
  • Please remember to line up outside the building on the playground and wait for your teacher to come get you at 8:00. For campus safety, students are not permitted to wait in the hallway outside their classroom for their teacher or drop their belongings off in the classroom before school.
  • Please remember to tell your child where to go after school and make sure to communicate this with the teacher as well. Please remember to follow the school guidelines for drop off and pick up. 
  • Please remember to return the initial paperwork given at Meet the Teacher Night and all syllabus paperwork as soon as possible. 
  • Please remember to check the projects tab for all upcoming projects this year. Students will have part of their first project due the second week of school. 
  • Please remember to check mail on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This week's mail will include the class syllabus and AZ Merit data.
Our Learning this Week:
  • We will be doing all our beginning of the year benchmarks on Monday.
  • In Spalding, we will review Spalding position and basic procedures. We will review manuscript and cursive handwriting rules. Students will not be given a spelling list this week. We will complete oral and written phonogram review. 
  • In language/writing, we will review parts of speech and sentence types.
  • In reading, we will go over this quarter's projects. We will also begin our first book study.
  • In math, we will complete lessons 1, 3 and 4 on review of addition, sequences/digits and place value. Students will have math homework starting this week. 
  • In science, we will learn about the structures and functions of plant parts. We will read A60-67 and A70-73. 
  • In social studies, we will begin our study of the parts of maps. We will also learn about the characteristics of the Southwest region.
