Please make sure students are not bringing outdoor jackets to wear in the classroom. (Hooded, designs) Science packet needs to be coming to school daily with students, and they should be working on this every night. Next Monday 1/21 is MLK day there is no school and no tutoring. Please sign up to help volunteer for Field day on January 25th. Academics: Spalding: We will be entering list 18 and testing on week 17 words Language Arts: We are going over Comparison Ajectives then will have our Grammar test 10 on Tuesday. We will be working on our benchmarks in reading and writing the rest of the week. Reading: We will be working on our study guide and test for summary and theme which we will test on Tuesday. Then we will work on our benchmark and finish out the week with our book studies. Math: We are working on multiplying 3 digit numbers, and displaying data using graphs. We will havea study guide for test 11 on Wednesday and test on Thursday. Then we will have a benchmark on Friday. Science: We are going to be going over the scientific method on Monday, and form predictions on Tuesday. On Wednesday we will be in Miss Magnusen’s room where she will walk the classes through the expectations of the science fair packet for the question on pages 11-12 and answer questions students may have. On Thursday we will have a lab safety power point and end the weeo back in Miss Magnusen’s room where she will explain the Reference page and Book Report to the students. Social Studies: We will be doing a Skills lesson on Fact and Opinion and go into lesson 3 in unit 3 of our social studies book. Weekly Announcements
Spirit Day 1/11- Students may wear Spirit Day shirts No School 1/21 – MLK Day Students should be having their homework folder checked nightly to see if there is material that needs to be read and signed by parents/ guardians. Also by signing the planner you are acknowledging that you have seen their completed homework and behavior logs. Please do not sign the planner without looking to see if homework is completed. Also, please be sure to check behavior charts and sign if there has been a checkmark added because of a behavior event that day. Academics Spalding - The students will enter List 17 Spelling Words and will be tested on List 16 on Friday 1/11. Language/Writing – Students will continue grammar lessons focused on nominative cases and diagraming these more complex sentences. Grammar test next week. We will also be looking at different stories and writing exercises will focus on comparing themes in different stories. Reading - We will continue reading strategies identifying elements of stories and recalling main ideas. We are also beginning to practice the proper use of elements of a good book: Setting, Character, Plot, Theme, etc. We will continue reading in our book studies (Tale of Despereaux, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nymn, The BFG and Holes - the study depending on which teacher your child has). . November Poem Recitations are due January 30. No book report this quarter – see Science Fair Project for this quarter’s “report”. Math – The students will start the week with a review of concepts learned before the break and a test on 1/9. We will continue with lessons 56 and 57 practicing comparing and using fractions. Science –In class we will begin our studies on the elements of scientific method. The questions for the science fair projects should be submitted by 1/25 for approval from the teacher. Please do NOT start experiments until the question/concept has been approved by the student’s teacher. Students should also be reading their biography of the scientists they have chosen (see rubric for ideas/instructions). Social Studies - We are reading Unit 3, Lesson 1. We are continuing to explore the process of western expansion and Arizona’s role in the new country. ANNOUNCEMENTS
It's a short week this week. Remember, Thursday is our party from 10:30 - 11:30. It's an early-release day with pick-up at 12:15. You may sign your child out before 12:15, if necessary. ACADEMICS * This week there will be no new words in Spalding or Spelling. We will be working on our rule pages. * In Grammar, we're learning about PREDICATE NOMINATIVE (Lesson 51) and NOUN CASE, PART 1 (Lesson 52). * In Reading, we will learn to summarize and discuss the theme and moral of legends from different cultures. We we are finishing up our Book Studies and watching the corresponding movies. * In Math, we are identifying PRIME and COMPOSITE numbers(Lesson 55) and comparing FRACTIONS (Lesson 56). * In Science, we will be going over the Scientific Method project for Quarter 3. * In Social Studies, students will be given Unit 2 study guide on Monday and the test will be given on Wednesday. L,A./Writing - Students will be working on a response to literature packet this week and next reading Pandora's Box. Reading - Students will do a study guide on Tuesday the 11th for elements of a narrative test on Wednesday the 12th. Book studies will be done in the individual 4th grade classrooms on Thursday only this week. Math - Students will do study guide 9A on Monday and take test on Tuesday for 9B Saxon. Math facts daily and math for today. Lesson 52 and Lesson 53 will cover 3 digit subtraction and word problems with equal groups and one digit division with a remainder. Science - Students will work on pros/cons flood packet, earth's atmosphere, and begin study guide for Tuesday and Wednesday. Test on Volcanoes and Earthquakes will be on Thursday in the a.m. due to Geography Bee. Social Studies - The students will take a short quiz this week on the reading from Unit 2 Lesson 4. on Westward Expansion. Students will also have activities after the reading and note taking. We will be assessing reading comprehension with a story about a Japanese family impacted by a tsunami. Math - The students will continue with math lessons and will have the next test on Thursday 11/29. We will complete through Lesson 45 and practice some additional skills. Science - The students will begin to study about Earthquakes and Volcanoes. Students should be able to start studying notes this coming weekend. Remember be creative with studying- changing the process and setting a timer can help improve focus and reduce resistance to studying. Test Date will be week of 12/10. - On Monday afternoon we have the spelling bee. - On Tuesday afternoon (1:15-2:45) we have the Turkey Trot. Reminder - The poem recitation of "In Flanders Fields" is due November 29th and 30th. - The Fancy Folder Project is due December 7th. - The reading log is due December 20th. Note On the newsletters, we do our best to get these updated weekly. Please know that they are subject to change as needed. We hope that this website, including the newsletters, have been helpful to you. Academics Spalding - Since we have a 2-day academic week, students are working on spelling list 13 to write letters or stories. Language - We will be working on grammar Lesson 43 that reminds us when NOT to capitalize words. Also, in lessons 44 and 45, they will learn more about identifying and using prepositional phrases and the objects of prepositions. They will be diagramming prepositional phrases as adjectives. Reading - Book studies will continue on Monday and Tuesday in the individual 4th grade classrooms. Math -We will complete lessons 43 and 44 on adding and subtracting decimal numbers, and multiplying two digit numbers. Science - Please review the study guide for the test on Tuesday. Due to the Spelling Bee on Monday afternoon and the Turkey Trot Tuesday afternoon we will be doing little or no Science or Social Studies. Announcements - There will be no school on Monday, Nov. 12 for Veteran's Day.
Quarter 2 progress reports will be handed out in your child's 4th grade classroom on Thursday, Nov. 15.
